Bio/Statement

SHELBY HEAD has worked as a professional sculptor for over thirty years. Her work has been widely exhibited and is represented in numerous private and corporate collections. Head's education includes M.F.A. studies at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and she received her M.A. in sculpture at Adams State University in Colorado. She has extensive technical experience working as a professional mold-maker and wax technician for several art foundries in New Mexico and as a wax technician for sculptor, Tom Otterness. In the 1980s, Head built models and supervised model-makers for stop-motion animated television commercials and music videos in New York City. Shelby Head is represented by Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery in Stamford, CT.

Precisely made, pared-down, and minimal presentation, the contemporary works of Shelby Head explore different theories, techniques, and ideas that are organized in collections. Infused with a sense of simplicity and refinement, her image is derived from the essence of an idea. Paper, light, metal, wood, plastic, and found objects are some of the materials used over many years to produce works of art that create an elegant and intricate balance between depth and simplicity.

Local artists are on a mission here in Stamford, moving into this gallery on Bedford Street where they're using their talents to open our eyes. Some sculpt, others weave or paint, but each artist here at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery is united on one thing: "I really understand the importance of those after-school programs," said artist...
